Youth Activities: The Leaders

THE YOUTH ENDOWMENT

The Youth Endowment is money invested to produce interest to use for youth programming. Beginning with seed money from the large gift of a few years ago, generous members have raised the youth endowment to $12,500. The more money we have in the fund, the more interest will be available to use for youth programming, one of the areas of the church targeted by the visioning task force. The more we put in the youth endowment, the bigger we can dream. And best of all, any money we put in the youth endowment now will benefit our kids next year — and the year after that, and the year after that, and on and on.

YOUTH MISSION TRIP

Five years ago, a group of youth and adults from our congregation traveled to Nicaragua to learn more about life in a less developed nation. We visited women’s co-ops, learned from young people who had conducted literacy campaigns in the countryside, and worked alongside Nicaraguans constructing a community center and school. The kids from both countries quickly overcame language barriers, making friends, dancing, playing baseball, and eating together. As hoped, several of the youth who are now in college still talk about the experience and the profound influence on their lives . . . as do the adults!

It’s time to start planning another Youth Mission Trip. Our first informational meeting for anyone interested in the trip was after church on Sunday, December 2 in the church offices. Participants will be middle school and high school youth, and adults. However, middle school participants will need to be accompanied on the trip a by a parent. Please stay tuned for more about this exciting adventure.

CONFIRMATION

Youth in eighth grade and older are invited to participate in confirmation classes in 2010. Confirmation is held on an every-other-year schedule. Confirmation is an important rite of the church in which people can learn more about their faith and develop relationships with other members of the church.

Consider Going To Camp This Summer!
Here are two options for church camps for children this summer through the United Church of Christ. Children will have a unique opportunity to learn about their faith in a wilderness setting with other children and marvelous camp staff. Each camp offers unique opportunities for engagement with the outdoors, arts and crafts, and being in a setting that nurtures the development of faith.

Camp Mimanagish

Camp Mimanagish is in the heart of the Abasaroka Wilderness 40 miles due south of Big Timber, Montana. The camp is close to the beautiful Boulder River deep in the Boulder Valley. Mimanagish is the “place of the singing water” and is a camp run by the Montana-Northern Wyoming Conference of the United Church of Christ. For more information go to www.campmimanagish.org.

Here’s the schedule for summer 2010. The grade groupings are based on what grade the child will be in the fall of 2010.

  • July 13-17 3-4 grade camp
  • July 18-24 5-6 grade camp
  • July 25-31 10, 11, and 12 grade camp
  • >
  • August 1-7 7, 8 and 9 grade camp

Camp N-Sid-Sen

N-Sid-Sen is a year-round camp and conference center located on the shores of Lake Coeur d'Alene in northern Idaho. The name comes from a phrase of the Coeur d'Alene native people meaning "Point of Inspiration". This incredibly beautiful site includes 270 acres and almost a mile of shore line.

  • June 27-30 Kids Camp (2, 3, 4 grades)
  • July 5-11 Intermediate Camp (grades 5, 6)
  • July 11-17 Senior Aqua Camp (grades 10, 11, 12)
  • August 1-7 Jr. High Aqua Camp (grades 7, 8, 9)

GOOD STUFF WE DID

Food Labyrinth

The Senior High Youth built a food labyrinth once again in conjunction with the Hunger Banquet staged at the University. In order to build the labyrinth, the Sr. High Youth organized a non-perishable food drive The labyrinth was open for anyone interested in walking it from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily beginning Friday, November 11 and continuing until 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15 when it was disassembled and all the food donated to the Missoula Food Bank.

Here's the labyrinth from 2004~

And here's the labyrinth from November 2005,
with The UCCC Preschoolers walking it!

MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH NEWS

UCC Middle School Youth Group Meetings

As the parent volunteer for the UCC middle school group, Robin Nielsen-Cerquone is helping again this year to coordinate the weekly meetings with May. They will again be held on Thursdays, beginning on Thursday, September 9 (the week after Labor Day weekend).

This year we will have a few small changes in how it works. It will run from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, and the kids will not share a dinner. Instead we will ask one parent each week to bring some kind of snack the kids can share (popcorn, cheese and crackers, fruit, dessert, pretzels, whatever -- Robin will be coordinating that later, after we get started, so don't worry about it now). This will give May more time for her infamous running-around-the-church games, and hopefully give working parents and kids with after-school sports a bit more time to get to the church.

For those of you who are new to the group, here are some answers to the questions most frequently asked:

So we hope to see a bunch of you on September 9. Until then, please email or call (543-1247) if you have any questions at all. This will be great!

Thank you
The annual middle school homecoming bake sale was a great success. Thanks to all for participating and especially Dave Scheel and Linda Tawney who opened Great Harvest Bakery for baking Friday night! This fund raiser provides the cash for all the middle school events during the year.
